I found this guy at a Daniel Johnston concert who was actually part of the security team (which means he simply pointed people to the door).
Never before has a t-shirt fit the person wearing it so perfectly. So here’s a reader request that will hopefully last for a while. We want more evidence of awesome t-shirts at concerts. Find one and send it in…who knows? there may be a prize involved that’s more than just the deep satisfaction of finding something cool.
Holy crap I’m excited. I’ve been listening to the Grand Archives since they released their EP last year and have been screaming about their awesomeness ever since.
Today, thanks to a random desire to download the iLike sidebar for iTunes, I discovered the dates for GA’s tour, one of which is in Allston, Massachusetts.
The band was started by Mat Brooke, who is pile of indie-rock genius (former guitarist from Carissa’s Wierd and Band of Horses). But with GA, there’s more of an uplifting vibe that you get, which culminates in the track below “The Crime Window.”
Below are the tour dates. I’d buy tickets now because this might be the only time you can see this band for a low price of $12 (what I just paid thanks to a debt-ridden Amex card).

It’s been commonly reported that the military and creative fathers have been using certain types of music to either get people out of a building or to torture them through sound. In Iraq, I think they (and by “they” I mean “us) Britney Spears and heavy metal. When I was a kid, my dad used a recording of preschool kids singing the alphabet song, all in a different key and time.
Then, on the way home from work today, I was listening to the Red Sox Home Opener and a commercial came on talking about Gloria Estefan coming to a nearby casino. The announcer kept yelling “Gloria Estefan live!” over and over again, so much so that I was almost brought back to that same fetal position years ago when those damn kids sputtered through “l-m-n-o-p” repeatedly.
What’s your version of a personal aural hell? What concert will be waiting for you in hell when you finally light that massive bag of crap on your boss’ porch?
Here’s mine.
Opening act: Hinder
Transitional act: Creed
Main act: Fergie singing “Big Girls Don’t Cry” while peeing on everyone.
I remember when I was a kid and I heard about random bands getting back together and thinking “Who the fuck are they?” Even back then, I knew it was all for the sweet dolla dolla bill y’all.
Truthfully, I am excited to hear some of the old favorites from this band like “Plush,” “Creep,” and “Sex Type Thing.”
But it’s hard to ignore that this comes on the heels of Scott Weiland getting tossed from Velvet Revolver. Is this a form of revenge? Will there be a thunderdome fight between STP and VR? Or did Weiland take enough drugs to mentally travel back in time (a la “Lost”) to 1994 when they still had fans?
Anyway, here are the tour dates. If you live in these towns and can’t make the show, you may be able to catch Weiland in your local jail.
We got this yesterday and we’re excited for two reasons. One, Aimee Mann kicks ass and two, we’ve finally been respected enough (at least by one agency, thanks Girle Action!) to pass along MP3s.
This is especially exciting since we were recently webslapped by the long arm of the Raconteurs who didn’t want us to stream their song.
Enough anger. Below you will find a new song from Mann titled “Thirty One Today” that will be off her seventh studio album @#%*! Smilers due out on June 3.
And, as you can probably guess, the song is about Mann’s personal best at chicken nugget eating. Don’t buy it? Fine. It’s about the depressive state of aging.
“I thought my life would be different somehow/ I thought my life would be better by now…”
Thanks Mann. Whenever I need a melodic song with depressive undertones, you constantly deliver the goods. In fact, to prepare, I’m going to take your advice and get loaded and watch CNN.

Currently my favorite thing about living in New York City is that when I learn of an impossibly amazing band, it is like guaranteed they will be playing in the city within two weeks. Most recently and notably, a little duo called The Dodos were brought to my attention about two weeks ago and I’ve been patiently obsessed enamored since. Thusly, The Dodos were handed to me on a delicious musical platter in the form of a show yesterday evening at Sound Fix in Brooklyn’s hipster mecca Williamsburg, preceding a show at Death By Audio.
The venue itself sucked as far as venues go, because it’s really a record store sutured to a quaint, candelabra-lit bar in the back. The stage? Not really. I claimed my spot along the side wall opposite the bar (poor planning), lined with benches and tables; I propped myself on the bench’s backing and still couldn’t really see much beyond the audience hovering over where the band seemed to be standing. I did, however, manage a sweet view of drummer Logan Kroeber who sustained impressive levels of enthusiasm for such a modest little gig.
The show was short but free, so no complaints—and bonus points for squeezing my favorite track on the recently released and Pitchfork-praisedVisiter in their six-song set (that song being “The Season,” if you care). Plowing through the first three tracks on Visiter—beseeching no applause—Kroeber and vocalist/guitarist/other-of-two Meric Long (both supported by a third tour-hand and synth-xylo-enthusiast) erupted with energy by means of their respective instruments. They threw in a track from their debut album Beware of the Maniacs for good measure.
Normally I’d knock a band for playing too true to their recordings (and in chronological order, no less), but I’m still running on the novelty high, so bonus points all around! The Dodos are playing a full show (for $10 this time, the capitalists) Sunday at the Mercury Lounge. Check out their MySpace page to test the folksy waters.
After a quick and quiet release, (their album was done a couple of weeks ago and they released without any press involvement) the Raconteurs are hitting the road for a cross country tour.
Here’s the thing. I was excited about “Broken Boy Soldiers” but was eventually disappointed with the somewhat non-rocking album.
Their newest effort “Consolers Of The Lonely” delivers the album I wanted two years ago. And the idea that they said “screw you” to the press in terms of marketing is daring, proving that faith in the music industry is being flushed away like a rotten smelling turd filled with corn.
Check out “Five on the Five
OK, so we had that song streaming on the site for about 10 hours before we got an email from the “Web Sheriff” politely threatening us to pull it off. Since we don’t have any lawyers (or any semblance of an actual office), we adhered to the email.
However, since we are trying to promote music rather than steal, we were given a widget that had the new video for “Salute Your Solution.” It wasn’t compatible with Wordpress, which makes sense since it’s one of the widely used programs out there for blogs.
Instead, we present you with silence, which is all we can offer at the moment. If you’re in the mood for it, it’s at the bottom of the page.

I first heard his album “Glue” late last year as I was driving home from work in the rain. His soft melodies and acoustic guitar blended helped calm down the rage and allowed me to fight the inevitable traffic.
The album has truly grown on me and, after checking out the track on the bottom, urge anyone to grab it.
How are all these first-time festivals getting kick-ass performers? I tried to put a festival on in my backyard and all I got was a bum on a harmonica and my dad snoring in a lawn chair with a half-empty beer in his hand (somehow, it was a success).
We got news of the inaugural lineup of Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival being held in San Francisco’s historic Golden Gate Park on August 22 - 24, 2008.
But we literally lost our shit when we found out that RADIOHEAD was going to be there. Did you catch that? I said RADIOHEAD.
What’s that? Too indie rock for you and want the hip-hop? Little Brother and The Coup will be there too. I know. My pants are soiled too.
Tickets go on sale this Sunday, March 30, 2008, at 10am PST through www.SFOutsidelands.com.
If you’re on the East Coast and suck at math, the time is 1pm for you.
The rest of the initial lineup is after the jump. The festival claims there will be a total of 60 acts on five stages. Happy Hunting…and screw you if you live on the West Coast.
All those mentioned above, plus a multitude more, will be at the very first Pemberton Festival, located in Pemberton in British Columbia, an area most-known for Whistler Mountain and drunken donkeys roaming the streets (maybe not the last one).
It’s being put on by Live Nation, which explains why they got so many names involved with the inaugural show that include Coldplay, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Flaming Lips and My Morning Jacket (entire lineup after the jump).
It’s also the first “European-style festival” that Live Nation has put together from scratch, which means I expect it to be pretentious and exclusive in the coming years.
Not familiar with Canada? Find Vancouver (it’s north of Seattle) and drive north. If you end up in the middle of nothingness, you’ve gone too far.
