Pinback, the duo that makes songs that sometimes have no meaning (that’s the point), is embarking on a West Coast tour, which again, sucks for my East Coast ass. Bah.
I shouldn’t complain. I saw these guys in Phoenix during their Summer in Abaddon tour. But to be honest, I picked up their recent release, Autumn of the Seraphs, and while it’s good, I still like “Summer” a bit more. Maybe I’m missing something…or just upset that Pinback appears to be avoiding me.
C’mon guys, I was drunk that night and didn’t mean to yell those things…

Philly/Brooklyn rockers Marah have announced a tour starting this month in support of their new album Angels of Destruction!
The album was released on Tuesday. It’s the follow up to their 2005 album If You Didn’t Laugh, You’d Cry which Stephen King liked a whole lot. Really though, how could you possibly dislike a band that gives props to Mummers?
Marah’s albums tend to be heavily produced — banjos on top of carnival sounds on top of sports announcer voice overs. This album is certainly no exception. But it’s good. And their live shows are legendary for their intensity.
To quote the band’s blog: “P.P.S. – shows to follow will be mega!”

I’m pretty sure I’m not alone, but I can’t get enough of Mika. His debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion, puts me in a great mood every time I hear it. I’ve been listening to it regularly since I bought it in May (it was released in the US in March) and I’m still not sick of it. As you may have guessed, I’m kind of a sucker for falsetto voices and silly pop songs, so you can imagine how excited I was to hear he’d be touring the US in February. It’s a very short tour, but he’s hitting cities all over the country. If you haven’t caught the Mika fever yet or you won’t be able to catch a concert, I urge you check out the albumLife in Cartoon Motion. And in the meantime, here’s a video of “Lollipop” to get you in the mood:
This is weird. I was *just* saying the other day how I’m really digging the albums of these two bands and would love to see them live again. Jimmy Eat World’s Chase This Light is wonderful gym music and the Foo Fighter’s Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace has been in constant rotation in my car.
And just this morning, I find out that these bastards will tour together, again, no where near my city. Not even on the East Coast. Awesome.

There’s some big news that was announced late last week (Friday) about one of my favorite bands, Drive-By Truckers, the alt-country group with the “three-ax attack.”
According to their Myspace page, their new album titled Brighter Than Creation’s Dark will be released on Jan. 22. Tomorrow, you’ll be able to buy the EP which will feature the following tracks:
Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife
3 Dimes Down
The Righteous Path (you can hear this on their Myspace page, along with 2 other new songs)
The Purgatory Line
If you buy the EP, you’ll be credited toward the purchase of the album next year (called the “Complete My Order Program“)
Patterson Hood also announced the dates for the band’s The Home Front World Tour.
And guess what? They are FINALLY coming to a city near me (I lived in Phoenix for 5 years and had to deal with them passing me by constantly).
If you want to catch up to society, check out last year’s A Blessing and A Curse. But if you want to hear the song that instantly made me a Truckers fan, download “The Deeper In.”

Cake is ramping up for another run of the Unlimited Sunshine tour. This is the fourth incarnation of the traveling festival of eclectic acts headlined by the always quirky Cake.
The tour kicks off at the end of this month and runs through the middle of December with 12 stops, mostly along the West and East Coast corridors. Accompanying Cake will be Brazilian Girls, Oakley Hall, Detroit Cobras, King City, and Agent Ribbons.
After mentioning this tour to a few ladies, it became clear to me that the ladies are not so much into the Cake. Is it just that the ladies I know are Cake haters? Or is Cake a dudes-only kinda band? Let us know in the comments.
But enough chit-chat, tour dates and details after the jump …
I ain’t gonna lie. My sister bought Kanye, which I quickly ripped to my computer, and I tried out the new Amazon music store by downloading “Ayo” for a measly 89 cents (when I bought it, there was no tax for top forty songs. Could be good if you need to legally buy that guilty pleasure of yours).
I ‘m just as confused as you are. Rooney is a indie-pop band from California that make, for lack of a better term, “sunshine music” (which in my world means it’s music that demands to be listened to in the sunlight). It’s surprising that this is the band that would tour with the Polyphonic Spree, an army of a band (over 12 members) that consists of a choir and make-shift orchestra.
The Spree dropped a new album this year called “The Fragile Army.” On their current tour, they have gotten rid of their flowing robes and embraced their dark side, donning black uniforms. I interviewed co-founder Julie Doyle a couple of months ago (she’s the wife of frontman and co-founder Tim DeLaughter) and she had this to say about the new album:
“The sound on the album is one that we were looking for early on,” says Doyle. “Back then, we were just calling on friends and then the band got going so we decided to roll with it. But artistically, it was time to make the record we’ve been wanting to make.”
I’ve heard it. It’s awesome. It’s also more cohesive than their past albums. And seeing this entire band on stage is nothing short of a trip.

Get your alt country fix on this fall with two of the best in the business. Memphis, TN based Lucero are possibly the best live band you will see on any stage in this great nation of touring musicians. Every time I’ve seen these guys they’ve been incredible- drunk or sober- it doesn’t matter. If you haven’t picked up their most recent record Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers stop what you’re doing and go pick it up now- while you’re at it- get That Much FurtherWest as well. Supporting is the always entertaining Bobby Bare Jr. who is supporting his new disc The Longest Meow.

Here’s the aforementioned title track from That Much Further West.
I saw the Foo Fighters during their In Your Honor Tour (or whatever it was called). They opened with “In Your Honor,” “Best of You,” and “One by One.” After that trifecta of rock, I proceeded to lose my mind, drink four pints of beer and scream “FOOOOO!!!” for the rest of the night and a little bit on the ride home.
Thankfully they didn’t play any of the acoustic songs, which only get put in my daily rotation when I have a hangover at work.
The Foo are returning with a new album on Sept. 25 with “Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace” and will be hitting the road for a couple of dates on the East Coast. I’ll have to wait till they hit Boston to lose my mind again.
